Kid brains are turning to mush–and zombie kids are threatening to turn even more kids into zombies unless you help us right now!
How’s that for a fundraising pitch? (If you’re already convinced, you can go here to fund our campaign.)
It’s even kind of true. You see, these days, lots of kids don’t get creative writing practice in school. They don’t know how liberating it can be to write a poem, or to create a story out of their real-life experience. Or out of their own crazy imaginations.
Helping kids learn to love writing is what Second Story is all about. Through in-school and after-school programs and writing camps, Second Story makes writing fun.
Kids who like writing do better in school. And writing is not only a useful life skill–it’s also the gateway to greater interest in reading and every other field of study under the sun, from physics to medicine to business to engineering.
Creative writing allows kids to expand their minds…and expanded minds are awfully attractive to zombies. Is there any proof that kids who don’t like writing turn into zombies? You’ll have to watch the video below to find out.
Anyway: Second Story is raising money with a big, zombie-filled weekend, Friday and Saturday, October 26-27, called Write of the Living Dead–sponsored by Punchnel’s, Faegre Baker Daniels, Well Done Marketing, Lafayette Square, and Service Center. Here’s what’s happening:
Friday, October 26
Punchnel’s Writer Night for Second Story: Write of the Living Dead Edition
7 p.m.
Service Center for Contemporary Culture and Community
Join us for a night of ghoulish good fun and readings from pro horror writers Laird Barron, Gary Braunbeck, and Hugo winner Catherynne Valente—plus the winners of Punchnel’s Zombific(a)tion! zombie story contest. It’s FREE—and fun for everyone. (But, hey—it’s horror. Parental discretion is advised.)
Saturday, Oct 27
Horror Writing Workshop
Service Center for Contemporary Culture and Community
1 – 3 p.m.
Get personal attention and learn from the pros! Laird, Gary, and Catherynne will be on hand to help you get in touch with your inner demons in intimate writing sessions. Space will be limited to 15 attendees. Cost—just $25. Hardly an arm or a leg. Register at Eventbrite for the workshops today.
Saturday, Oct 27
The Big Family Zombie Tag Party
Service Center for Contemporary Culture and Community
6 – 9 p.m.
Undead moms and dads and kids of all ages: join us for the biggest zombie tag party of the year! We’re playing zombie tag, telling scary stories, enjoying holiday treats, and having fun. Beer, wine, soft drinks, and cider will be available, and all proceeds benefit Second Story. You don’t have to dress up–just come hang out with the zombies! It’s just $10 for adults, $5 for kids 12 and under. You can buy your tickets right now at Eventbrite.
Second Story needs your help! Bringing in the writers and setting up our Zombie Party is going to take some scratch–so we’ve started an Indiegogo campaign to raise the money. Make a pledge, and you can get some cool swag–including tickets to the party, slots in the writing workshop, autographed books–even dinner with the special guest stars.
But, please: do it now. We can’t afford to have any more kids turn into zombies.
