Noir. It’s dark. It’s brooding. It can be violent and depressing.

But that’s only half the story for this fiction contest. We want you to take the traditional elements of noir and blend them with … something else.

What that something else is is entirely up to you. Want to set your noir story in the far-flung future? Write a sci-fi noir story. Want your incredibly attractive protagonist (who is deeply disturbed and prone to hellishly violent outbursts) to look for love in all the wrong places, only to find it staring her right in the face in the form of her incredibly attractive platonic best guy friend (who is addicted to heroin)? Write a romantic comedy noir story.

You get the idea. We’re calling this hybrid noir, and we want to see your take on it.

And that’s not the only twist. We want to see it in 500 words or less. And we want to see it now.

Send us your twist on noir in 500 words or less by 11:59 p.m. on Friday, February 13th. Finalists and winner be judged by guest reader David James Keaton; our top prize winner will receive $50 and publication in Punchnel’s, and up to four additional winners will receive publication at our standard rate. All winners will have the opportunity to read at our Noir Night on Friday, February 27th. (Details to come.)

Time’s already wasting. Upload your submission to us here. Good luck.
